We named the company after the Sumac tree - a species of flowering plants in the family Anacardiaceae, for no other reason that it was in the garden at the time. We're often asked if the name has anything to do with Apple Mac's, but it hasn't. Our logo is a Sumac leaf - it was not influenced by the NZ Silver Fern (although we admit it is similar).
To give you an idea of costs, a simple CMS site would normally take 3-4 weeks and would start at £5,000. Larger sites with more complex functionality or bespoke web applications would take longer and costs would start at around £15,000. Off-shore outsourcing is used by many software companies as a way of reducing developments costs by using cheaper programmers in other countries - India for example. We believe that this approach has its place, but it doesn't really work for our highly collaborative approach. We like to be close at hand and value face-to-face communication.
There are hundreds of freelance web designers out there. Some are very, very good, others not so. Finding the one with the right mix of business, design and technical skills can be difficult, as can getting hold of them when you want to make changes to your site later on.
